... contest 2 winners! :::

Thanks for all the submissions!

The theme for this contest was Cherry Blossom, but we received lots of off theme submissions, which is really cool. So we decided to pick four winners: one for Cherry Blossom and three for off-theme.

We will come up with a new contest soon. Keep the images coming!

Contest #2 deadline extended to 5/31/2009!

We recently posted a very exciting update to sketchinz. The new version includes some cool user requested features and we want to give you a chance to use them for the contest.

   * pause drawing - double tapping during drawing brings up a menu and you can resume drawing from there
   * turn reference photo on/off - you can hide and show the reference photo from the pause menu; create your sketch using the reference, then hide it and make corrections
   * red cursor - even though the default cursor has a white outline, it's sometimes hard to see; now you can switch to a red cursor from the pause menu
   * add your name to drawings - when you upload a drawing, you get a chance to enter your name; your name will eventually show up on the website

Have fun, and keep the drawings coming!

If you are on a Mac, don't forget to download sketchinz Render from here. You can render high resolution versions of your drawings!

High resolution version of your sketches!

Did you ever wish you could print your sketches at high resolution? Well, now you can...

While sketchinz uses the iPhone's screen resolution for drawing, the data is recorded as vectors. This allows drawings to be rendered at insane resolutions. By insane I do mean insane. I just rendered one of the sketches 10000 pixels wide, which is sufficient to print as a 30 foot billboard...

Download the alpha version of sketchinz Render from here. At this point it's for Mac only. If you don't have access to a Mac just contact me and I'll send you a high resolution image.

You need the full version of sketchinz for this. Your sketch must be uploaded to the server so the render app can access it. Enter the drawing code, the desired width and hit 'render and save to desktop'. The image is saved as a PNG. At this time landscape images must be rotated in an external application (like photoshop.)

Feel free to send suggestions.

The first sketchinz contest is now closed!

Thanks for all your submissions! The quality of your artwork has far exceeded our wildest expectations. You guys rock!

The results will be announced February 15th.

Please keep the sketches coming, we'll be starting a new contest shortly.

share your sketches– socially...

You can now let your friends (and the world) know about your masterpieces! Just click the email, facebook, digg etc... links on the sketches page to spread the word!

sketchinz 1.1 app store delay

sketchinz 1.1 has been posted to the app store, but due to a small glitch the full version will not appear until Saturday (01/10/2009.) Sorry for the delay.

In the new version sketches can be deleted and some small bugs have been fixed.

You can download the full version here after 01/10/2009.

What's the difference between the free and full versions?

Sketchinz has two versions:

 sketchinz (->get it on itunes)

sketchinz free (->get it on itunes)

The full version of sketchinz allows users to draw, save, and share their sketches via uploading to the sketchinz server. Sketchinz free is mostly for downloading and playback, but also functions as a trial version so users can test their drawing skills. Note that drawings made in sketchinz free are only available during the current session and cannot be saved.

Please check out the cool sketches that others have uploaded by clicking the sketches tab. These can be downloaded and replayed by finding the codes listed under the titles of the sketches and entering them in the application's "files" "download" menu.

$1.99 for the Holidays!

Sketchinz Free is in the top 20 Lifestyle apps!

To say thank you, we dropped the price of the full version to $1.99 for the holidays. The full version allows you to save your sketches and share them through the website.

Happy Holidays!

Share your art!

One of the coolest features of sketchinz is that you can send your drawings to others by uploading them to the server. If you tag your images "public", they will also be posted in the sketches section.

While you can only upload sketches using the full version of the app, even sketchinz free users can download and play your sketches. You can send cool drawings or messages that redraw themselves.

You can even propose to your loved one, check out this cool sketch: shs367. (By the way, you should get a piece of real diamond to go with it, too.)

Soph Sit - sketch demo based on a reference image

Sketchinz allows you to create compelling drawings using reference images.

Go to images -> get reference and pick any image from your photo library. The image will show up when you start your next sketch. It is rotated and fitted to match whatever format you choose. The reference image doesn't save with your sketch, it disappears as soon as your sketch is done.

(The line width is doubled for the sake of visibility.)

Soph Red - sketch demo based on a reference image

Don't worry about matching the reference exactly. Mistakes make the art better. You can fix mistakes however by using white ink.

Finally! Some stuff on sketchinz.com

So what the hell? Where was sketchinz.com until now?

Well, a couple things.

First, I did not expect Apple to approve the applications so fast. Heard horror stories about apps being kicked back and the approval process taking over three weeks. So I decided there would be plenty of time to get the website up.

However, both versions of sketchinz were approved and posted in the store within five days. Kudos to Apple for that!

So I guess I learned my lesson. It's kind of like what my mom told me: don't write a check until the paycheck has cleared.

Then, last Thursday we had an ice storm in New England. Over a million people lost power, phone, cable, internet... we were actually pretty lucky, our power came back after about a day and a half (but most of our neighbors and friends are still without power; send a good thought their way.)

Our internet is still down. I'm doing my best to get as much of the site up and running as possible at the Bedford Public Library and coffee shops like Panera.

And of course some damage control later. Check out this cool photo I took of a tree that came down in our back yard.

And a sketchinz self portrait with my best friend in cleanup, a Stihl chansaw. You can download the sketch with the code: ksm988.

Thanks to everyone who downloaded the app so far!
